Hello, 5th Grade Parents!

It’s your fabulous math team!  We wanted to send out a quick update about our homework and grading procedures so that you can partner with us in helping our students stay on track and be successful in math.


Homework

Generally, homework will be assigned each evening. We have carefully selected problems that reinforce the skill taught in class that day. While only certain problems are assigned, students are always welcome to complete additional problems if they feel they need more practice. 
We will NOT be accepting any late work except for students who were absent for the class in which the homework assignment was given. One day per absence to complete missing assignments.


Your child should be bringing home their SUCCEED book each evening. The SUCCEED book includes a Homework Helper along with the homework problems, which can be a great resource if your child needs a reminder of what we practiced in class.

Please have students keep their homework in the SUCCEED book overnight. When they return to school the next day, they may tear it out and turn it in before class begins—either at the beginning of the school day or at the beginning of their math class period.

We will try our best to give students Fridays off from homework, but there may be times when we feel additional practice is necessary to ensure understanding of a skill.


Graded Work

While Mr. Flaherty and I do not assign a percentage grade to each individual homework assignment, we do correct the homework and check for understanding.

Students may see: ✓ Check — Shows understanding of the skill (1 Point Possible) ✓– Check Minus — Needs a little more practice with the skill (0-1 Points Possible) O - Zero will be given for any assignments not turned in and completed on time. (0 Points) At the end of each week, students will receive one homework grade based on the number of assignments turned in compared to the number assigned.

For example:
5 out of 5 assignments turned in = 100%
4 out of 5 assignments turned in = 80%

This is why it is so important for students to complete and turn in their homework each day. Homework gives them an opportunity to reinforce what we learned in class and gives us valuable information about where they may need additional support.

In addition to homework, students will complete weekly Exit Tickets. Exit Tickets are completed independently at the end of a lesson and turned in before students leave class. These will be scored and entered as grades.

Each math module will also include a Mid-Module Assessment and an End-of-Module Assessment to measure students’ understanding and mastery of the skills taught throughout the module.

We hope this helps clear up any confusion about our homework and grading procedures! Our goal is to make sure students have plenty of opportunities to practice, receive feedback, and show what they know.

Griffin Time Math 

Thursdays: Weekly Module Mastery Checks - will be compromised of three exit tickets from within the last week and will be entered as classwork grades into Parent Portal.

Friday: Weekly Fluency Checks - will be compromised of fact checking multiplication facts (12 times tables), division, fractions, etc.
